According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Vulnerable as it is experiencing population decline due to habitat loss, degradation and collection of wild individuals for horticultural trade (Snijman et al 2007). This genus is currently in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Plants of this genus were among those targeted and/or confiscated during recent criminal prosecutions of illegal plant collecting.

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 3000 km², is known from nine locations and occurs and small and highly fragmented subpopulations whereby 30% of its habitat has been lost in the past 80 years (Snijman et al 2007).
