According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) as it has not been collected since 1960 and its 10% remaining habitat is threatened with habitat degradation (Raimondo, 2007). This genus is currently in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Another species of this genus is known to be threatened with harvesting of wild individuals (Raimondo & Turner, 2006). Plants of this genus were among those targeted and/or confiscated during recent criminal prosecutions of illegal plant collecting. This suggests that this genus may be targeted and that endangered species may be at risk to over-exploitation.

The last remaining habitat of this species was searched in 2007 whereby no plants were found (Raimondo, 2007).

The high likelihood of this species being extinct means that recovery may not occur, were exploitation to take place (Raimondo, 2007).
