According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as it is known from two remaining locations due to losing most of its habitat to forestry plantations and housing development as well as experiencing continued threat from alien invasive plants (Mtshali, 2015). Another species in this genus is known to be threatened by flower picking and collecting of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2006).

Few known locations of occurrence with past and ongoing existing threat (Mtshali, 2015), places the persistence of this species at risk. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
