According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Vulnerable as it is a rare and localised species that is experiencing population decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation (Raimondo et al. 2012). Other species in this genus are known to be threatened by collection of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2012, von Staden & Liltved, 2012).

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 1231 km² and is known from less than 10 locations with a declining population size (Raimondo et al. 2012).

Few known locations of occurrence with existing threats causing population decline (Raimondo et al. 2012), makes this species vulnerable to further population loss. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
