According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Vulnerable as it is known from one location that is potentially threatened by habitat loss, degradation and collection for horticultural purpose/succulent collectors (Archer et al. 2008). This genus is in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Plants of this genus were among those targeted and/or confiscated during recent criminal prosecutions of illegal plant collecting. There have been several recorded confiscations of species of the Bulbine genus from illegal collection (Confiscation List (2019-2021) provided by Cape Nature, SANParks Sendelingsdrift Botanic Garden, and Karoo Desert Botanic Garden and Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden). This species is thought to be highly collectable due to its appearance (A. Harrower, personal communication, 3 August 2022). This suggests that this genus is being targeted and that this species may be at risk.
