According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Vulnerable as it is threatened with wild harvesting of individuals for the horticultural and medicinal plant trade as well habitat loss which is causing ongoing population decline (Williams et al. 2008). Several research papers have indicated the utilization of Clivia species in medicinal trade (Williams et al. 2007; Williams et al. 2013; Mbongwa et al. 2021). Traders of Clivia species are not thought to differentiate between species and so the genus is being targeted and under threat of over-exploitation (Williams et al. 2008).

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 6900 km², is known from less than 10 locations and has declined by 30% in the past 90 years with declines expected to continue (Williams et al. 2008).

Whole individuals are this species are harvested from the wild (Williams et al. 2008).

According to Williams et al. (2008), 'Clivias are traded extensively and over-harvesting is a threat to the persistence of populations in the wild'. Clivia species are among the slowest growing in the Amaryllidaceae genus (Williams et al. 2008).
