According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as it is known from two to five locations and is experiencing ongoing population decline due to habitat loss from urban expansion and degradation from quarrying and livestock overgrazing (von Staden & Winter, 2008). This genus is currently in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Other species in this genus are known to be threatened by illegal plant collection as well as being popular in ethnomedicinal plant trade (Lötter & von Staden, 2016; Crouch et al. 2007). Several species of this genus were among those targeted and/or confiscated during recent criminal prosecutions of illegal plant collecting (Confiscation lists (2019-2021) provided by SANBI Karoo Desert Botanical Garden and Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden). This suggests that this genus may be targeted and that endangered species may be at risk to over-exploitation.

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 300 km² and is known from two to five locations (von Staden & Winter, 2008).

Few known locations of occurrence and existing threats causing ongoing population decline (von Staden & Winter, 2008), places the persistence of this species at risk. If exploitation were also to occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
