According to the SANBI Red List Assessment this species is Rare (von Staden, 2012). Other species in this genus are known to be threatened by collection of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2012, von Staden & Liltved, 2012).

This species, which occurs on isolated summit peaks within protected areas, has a large extent of occurrence (23 315 kmĀ²), but is very rare. Known from three locations where only 30 plants were recorded at one site, while only one individual was seen at each of the other locations (von Staden, 2012).

Few known locations of occurrence makes this species vulnerable to population loss. Were exploitation to occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
