Assessor: Sarah Schumann
According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Vulnerable as it is range restricted and is experiencing population decline due to habitat loss and degradation (Vlok & Raimondo, 2006). This genus is in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. There have been several recorded confiscations of this species and others of the Gibbaeum genus from illegal collection (Confiscation List (2019-2022) provided by Cape Nature, SANParks Sendelingsdrift Botanic Garden, Karoo Desert Botanical Garden, and Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden). This suggests that this genus is being targeted and that this species may be at risk.

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of less than 100 km² and is known from less than 10 locations (Vlok & Raimondo, 2006).

Few known locations with existing threat causing population decline (Vlok & Raimondo, 2006), makes this species vulnerable to further population loss. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
