According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as it is known from six to twelve remaining fragmented subpopulations due to habitat loss and is experiencing further population decline due to ongoing habitat loss from crop cultivation, urban expansion and alien plant invasion (Manning et al. 2011). This genus is currently in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Other Moraea species are known to be threatened by harvesting of wild individuals (Goldblatt et al. 2006; Goldblatt & Raimondo, 2006). Several species of this genus were among those confiscated from illegal plant collecting (Confiscation lists (2020-2021) provided by SANBI Karoo Desert Botanical Garden and Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden). This suggests that this genus may be targeted and that endangered species of this genus may be at risk to over-exploitation.

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 27 772 kmĀ² and is known from between six and twelve fragmented subpopulations that are declining (Manning et al. 2011).

Few remaining and fragmented subpopulations with several existing threats causing population decline (Manning et al. 2011), places the persistence of this species at risk. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
