According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is of Rare as it is known from 6 disjunct locations that are not thought to be threatened (Raimondo & Turner, 2007). This genus is in demand and of popular interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Several species of the Ornithogalum genus were among those targeted and confiscated during recent criminal prosecutions of illegal plant collecting (Confiscation lists (2021-2022) provided by SANBI Karoo Desert Botanical Garden, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and SANParks Sendelingsdrift Botanic Garden). This suggests that this genus may be targeted and that this species of this genus may be at risk.
