According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Vulnerable as it is a range restricted endemic that is potentially threatened with habitat degradation and collection from the wild for the succulent trade (von Staden, 2015). Currently this species has low numbers in the wild and is experiencing population decline due to illegal collection and ongoing drought (Helme, N, personal communication 2022, 25 January). This genus is in demand and of interest in international horticultural trade, as indicated by several online marketplace, e-commerce and auction sites. Plants of this genus were among those targeted and confiscated during recent criminal prosecutions of illegal plant collecting (Confiscation Lists (2018, 2021) provided by Cape Nature, SANBI Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, SANBI Karoo Desert Botanic Garden, SANParks Sendelingsdrift Botanic Garden and Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment). This suggests that this genus is being targeted and that this species may be threatened with over-exploitation.
von Staden, L. 2015. Othonna cremnophila B.Nord. & Van Jaarsv. National Assessment: Red List of South African Plants version 2020.1.
This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 40 kmĀ² and is known from 2-3 locations (von Staden, 2015). This taxon is known to have low numbers in the wild (Helme, N, personal communication 2022, 25 January).
von Staden, L. 2015. Othonna cremnophila B.Nord. & Van Jaarsv. National Assessment: Red List of South African Plants version 2020.1.
Whole individuals are removed from the wild causing population decline (Helme, N, personal communication 2022, 25 January).
Few known locations of occurrence with a low population number and existing threats including exploitation (von Staden, 2015) (Helme, N, personal communication 2022, 25 January), places the persistence of this species at risk. Recruitment and recovery may be poor.
