According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as it is known from seven locations with a small population that is experiencing population decline due to alien invasive plant encroachment and damaging fire regimes (Raimondo et al. 2012). Other species in this genus are known to be threatened by collection of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2012; von Staden & Liltved, 2012).

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 574 kmĀ², is known from seven locations with an estimated population size of less than 2000 mature individuals (Raimondo et al. 2012).

Few known locations of occurrence, a small declining population with several threats lowers this species chances of recovery and recruitment were exploitation to take place.
