This species is known from 25 sub-populations with some having <50 individuals and the largest about 1000 individuals. The population is considered to have a decreasing trend in response to urban and coastal development, and alien plant invasion (von Staden et al. 2012).

A small population size with existing threats causing population decline makes this taxon vulnerable to further population loss. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
