According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as its population has declined by between 60-70% in the past 30 years due to habitat loss and degradation (von Staden et al. 2012). Other species in this genus are known to be threatened by collection of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2012; von Staden & Liltved, 2012).

This taxon was formerly widespread and common however three to six subpopulations are thought to remain with an estimated population size of less than 1500 mature individuals (von Staden et al. 2012).

A small remaining population due to threats of wetland destruction puts the persistence of this species at risk. If exploitation were to occur, recovery may be poor.
