According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as it is known from three remaining sites that are threatened by habitat loss from coastal and urban development and alien invasive plant encroachment (von Staden et al. 2006). Another species in this genus is known to be threatened by flower picking and collection of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2006).

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 14 000 km² and an area of occupancy of <50 km², is known from three locations and has lost an estimated 50% of its habitat (von Staden et al. 2006) .

Few known locations of occurrence with existing threats (von Staden et al. 2006), makes this subspecies vulnerable to further population loss. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
