According to the SANBI Red List Assessment, this species is Endangered as it is has a small population that is threatened with habitat loss and degradation (Vlok et al. 2018). Other species in this genus are known to be threatened by collection of wild individuals (von Staden et al. 2012, von Staden & Liltved, 2012).

This taxon has an extent of occurrence of 26 068 kmĀ², is known from 8 subpopulations and a population decline of 40% (Vlok et al. 2018).
Few known subpopulations and existing threat causing population decline (Vlok et al. 2018), places the persistence of this subspecies at risk. Were exploitation to also occur, recruitment and recovery may be poor.
